Heartburn Drug Kidney Disease Lawyers

More than 15 million Americans rely on proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs to relieve heartburn and acid reflux caused by excessive acid produced by the stomach. What many people don’t know is that taking PPIs has been linked with an increased risk of severe health issues, including chronic kidney disease.

PPI drugs that may put you or your loved one at risk of chronic kidney disease include:

  • AcipHex®
  • Dexilant®
  • Nexium®
  • Prevacid®
  • Prilosec®
  • Protonix®
  • Zegerid®

If you or a loved one were diagnosed with chronic kidney disease while taking a heartburn drug, such as Nexium or Zegerid, contact Cory Watson Attorneys. PPI Heartburn Drugs Shown to Increase Risk of Kidney Damage

According to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine, patients who took PPIs once daily faced a 15 percent greater risk of chronic kidney disease. Patients who took PPIs two times per day experienced a 46 percent increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

These increased risks didn’t translate to H2 blockers—another popular drug type used to relieve heartburn and acid reflux. H2 blockers include Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid and Zantac. The same study showed that patients taking PPIs faced a 39 percent greater risk of chronic kidney disease than patients taking H2 blockers.

Another study, published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, showed that patients who took PPIs had a 96 percent increased risk of chronic kidney disease compared to those who took H2 blockers.

Severe PPI Heartburn Drug Side Effects

Side effects associated with Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and other PPI drugs include:

  • Acute kidney failure
  • Acute interstitial nephritis
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dialysis treatment

You may be able to file a lawsuit for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering if you or a loved one experienced any of these side effects while taking a PPI heartburn drug.
