Fire and Burn Injury
Fire Deaths amongst african american children
According to the U.S. Fire Administration’s African-American Babies and Toddlers, Fire Death Data Report (April 2004), “African-American children under age 5 are 2.5 times as likely to die in a residential fire than the rest of the African-American population. In fact, on average, a child under the age of 5 dies nearly every day from residential fire. When a fire breaks out, babies and toddlers can’t escape without the help of a well-prepared parent or caregiver.” In Alabama, African American children under 5 are 1.2 times more like to die in a residential fire than other African Americans.
Of the top 5 causes of unintentional death for African-American children in Alabama under age 5 from 1989-1998 (most recent data from the Office of Statistics and Programming, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control) fires/burns claimed second most lives after auto accidents . During this ten year period 607 African-Americans died in fires. 63 of these deaths were small children under the age of 5. Statistically, children under the age of 5 made up less than 10% of the total population of African-Americans in Alabama, but they made up more than 10% of the fire deaths for all African Americans in the state.
