Home Dialysis Machine Recall

Baxter Healthcare Corporation has issued a Class I recall of its HomeChoiceŽ and HomeChoice PROŽ peritoneal dialysis systems. These prescription medical devices are used to treat children and adults with kidney failure. Class I recalls are the most serious type of FDA recall and are only used when a product may cause serious injury or death.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the following safety alert for the HomeChoice and HomeChoice PRO dialysis machines: Reports of serious injuries and at least one death have been associated with increased intraperitoneal volume (IIPV), also known as overfill of the abdominal cavity. IIPV may result in serious injury or death from conditions including but not limited to:

  • abdominal wall and/or diaphragmatic hernias
  • acute hypertension
  • decreased pulmonary function
  • heart failure
  • hydrothorax
  • pericardial effusion
  • peritonitis
  • pulmonary edema

What are the symptoms of injury caused by a HomeChoice or HomeChoice PRO dialysis machine?

According to Baxter, the company that manufactures the devices, patients and caregivers should look for signs of IIPV. These symptoms include:

  • a child complaining of a "funny feeling" in the abdomen
  • a child crying during therapy without other apparent reasons
  • abdominal pain or discomfort
  • difficulty feeding
  • difficulty breathing
  • expanded or tense abdomen
  • feeling full or bloated
  • leakage of fluid from the PD catheter exit site
  • localized swelling around the genital area, groin region, belly button, or around the catheter site
  • unexpected increase in blood pressure
  • vomiting

What models numbers were affected by the recall?

The recall affects Baxter HomeChoice and Baxter HomeChoice PRO Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Systems, including but not limited to the following models:

  • HomeChoice 5C4471, 5C4471R, 5C4474, 5C4474R, T5C4441, T5C4441R, 5C4474D, 5C4474DR
