Nursing Home Abuse
Representing the injured, the wronged and their families
Every year there are reports of nursing home abuse on the part of care providers we wanted to trust.
In a report to the Special Research Review Section of the National Center on Elder Abuse, Lisa Nerenberg (MSW, MPH) stated, “The forms of elder abuse found in nursing homes mirror those found in domestic settings; they include homicide, physical and sexual assault, neglect, inappropriate restraint, financial abuse, isolation, verbal threats and intimidation.” This kind of heinous abuse is particularly frightening when thinking about our loved ones being subject to such maltreatment.
If we are to protect the rights of our residents, then we need to be sure that they are being provided the care that they need. CNN reported, “Almost one of every three nursing homes in the United States has been cited for an abuse or a violation.” The report goes on to detail that there are more than 17,000 nursing homes nationwide, 5,283 of which have been cited for abuse. Additionally, 1,600 homes were responsible for violations serious enough to place residents in immediate danger of serious injury or death.
