The Honorable M. Casey Rodgers of the Northern District of Florida has appointed Kristian Rasmussen of Cory Watson Attorneys Plaintiffs’ Co-Lead Counsel in the Multidistrict Litigation involving the pharmaceutical drug Abilify. Rasmussen will also serve on the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee. Two other Cory Watson attorneys were also appointed leadership positions; Ernest Cory was appointed to the Joint Settlement Committee and Stephen Hunt, Jr. was appointed to the Joint Discovery Committee. The litigation, In Re: Abilify (Aripiprazole) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2734 consolidates federal Abilify lawsuits cases from across the U.S. in federal court in Pensacola.
“We are very serious about this litigation. My firm has devoted a team of our best lawyers and staff to representing our clients in prosecuting the defendants. We will hold these drug companies accountable for taking advantage of innocent consumers, many of whom were already suffering from illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia,” said Kristian Rasmussen of Cory Watson Attorneys. The Cory Watson litigation team represents Abilify patients from across the U.S. Plaintiffs contend the maker of Abilify failed to warn users of the link between the drug and the increased risk of developing compulsive behaviors including compulsive gambling. Many Abilify users report that the compulsive behaviors stopped when the medicine was discontinued or the dose was reduced. Defendants include Bristol Myers Squibb Company, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co, Ltd., and Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc.
Abilify is prescribed to treat mental illnesses including depression, bi-polar disorder, Tourette syndrome and schizophrenia. Scientific studies and adverse event reports to the FDA have linked Abilify to potentially devastating side effects including compulsive gambling, hyper sexuality, compulsive spending and overeating. The FDA has warned that family members and caregivers of Abilify users need to monitor the people who use the prescription drug for signs of dangerous side effects .
