Hiring a lawyer to handle your personal injury case isn’t like hiring a plumber to fix a clogged drain. If you hire the wrong plumber, you might be out a couple hundred bucks. Hire the wrong lawyer, and you could leave thousands of dollars on the table. An experienced lawyer not only knows how to file your claim, but how to maximize your claim. That requires years of experience and a level of expertise you can’t find at every law firm.
Here are 3 things you should look for in any law firm you’re considering:
- Experience—When speaking with a prospective lawyer for your case, ask them about their experience. How many cases have they settled? How many times have they gone to court? Do they specialize in any practice areas? Based on their answers, you’ll know whether or not they have the experience and confidence to handle your claim.
- Track Record—An attorney’s track record is very important to consider when determining whether or not their law firm is the right fit. Have they had large settlements in the past? What is the average settlement amount for similar cases they’ve handled? Getting an idea of what they’ve done in the past will give you a good idea of how your claim might end up in their hands.
- Contingency Fee—Most personal injury law firms operate on a contingency fee basis. That means you only owe them legal fees if and when they settle your case. Make sure any law firm you’re considering offers a contingency fee arrangement.
If you’ve been injured in a car accident, you should definitely consider calling a lawyer. When you do, make sure the firm you choose has the necessary experience, track record, and fee arrangement to handle your case. You’ll be glad you did!
