Defective Airbags Cause Severe Injuries

By Cory Watson Attorneys | March 24th, 2016

Airbags are one of the most important safety measures built into modern cars. They are intended to deploy in the event of a car accident, reducing the trauma sustained at impact. When operating correctly, airbags can minimize injuries and save lives. When defective, these devices can do the opposite, severely injuring drivers and their passengers.

In the last couple years, Takata, a major manufacturer of airbags, has issued recalls of defective airbags found in several car makes and models. The danger comes from defective inflators, which are supposed to fill the airbag with gas at impact but instead create excess pressure that causes the bag to explode. These explosions can shoot metal fragments into the passenger compartment, causing serious injury or death.

As of February 2016, these recalls impact 14 vehicle manufacturers and millions of U.S. vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been working with Takata to inform consumers of the potential danger. To date, more than 7 million air bags have been repaired or replaced, but many more are still out there.

For a complete list of recalled vehicles, visit the NHTSA website.
