Erectile Dysfunction Drugs (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) Linked to Increased Melanoma Risk

Lawyers at Cory Watson Attorneys are investigating claims that the use of erectile dysfunction drugs may lead to an increased risk of melanoma.

If you developed melanoma after being treated for erectile dysfunction, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, pain, suffering, and other costs and expenses. Don’t suffer in silence—if your cancer was caused by a dangerous drug, then you deserve compensation.

Study Suggests Melanoma Is 84% More Common After Use of ED Drug Viagra

In June of 2014, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported the results of a long-term study linking melanoma and Viagra® use.

Researchers examined data from The Health Professionals Follow-up Study, a long-term study by the Harvard School of Public Health, which tracked the data of nearly 26,000 men from 1986 through 2000.  The researchers looked at both the instances of melanoma in these men as well as their reported Viagra® use.

Even after controlling for factors like a history of skin cancer and UV light exposure, men who had taken Viagra® were significantly more likely to develop melanoma than those who did not. Of the men who never used Viagra®, 4.3 out of every 1,000 developed melanoma skin cancer. Of the men who reported using the erectile dysfunction drug, 8.6 men out of every 1,000 developed melanoma–an 84% increase.

The lawyers at Cory Watson Attorneys are carefully reviewing the medical evidence to help patients determine whether they should take legal action.

PDE5 Inhibitors Link to Melanoma

Viagra® belongs to a class of drugs known as PDE5 Inhibitors. The PDE5 inhibitor affects the same pathways melanoma growth agents use. When PDE5 is blocked by drugs containg PDE5 inhibitors, melanoma can grow and spread.

While the 2014 study was limited to patients who had taken Viagra®, investigators are also looking into the safety of other erectile dysfunction drugs. The three most commonly prescribed erectile dysfunction drugs are Viagra®, Cialis® and Levitra®.

Melanoma is the most common form of skin cancer in the United States. Left untreated, melanoma can spread to other areas of the body such as the bones and liver, which can lead to death.
